This glossary will explain and define some common terms used in the field of correctional intervention.
alcohol dependence

anxiety disorder

characterized by excessive fear of or apprehension about real or perceived threats, leading to altered behavior and often to physical symptoms such as increased heart rate or muscle tension.

have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active.

bipolar disorder

a mental illness that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration

Bordeline personality disorder

Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness that severely impacts a person's ability to regulate their emotions

Depression

Domestic abuse
noun
an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence.
Example: This client is living in a place where there is a lot of domestic abuse and drug abuse

the habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs

Drugs dependence

drug dependence is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by significant impairment that is directly associated with persistent and excessive use of a psychoactive substance

Eating disorder
Noun
conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions and your ability to function in important areas of life
Example: I am suffering from eating disorder

Gaslight
verb
manipulate (someone) using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning
Example: I got gaslight by my partner today

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology explaining human motivation based on the pursuit of different levels of needs

Narcotics anonymous

obsessive-compulsive disorder

OCD is a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts ("obsessions") and/or behaviors ("compulsions") that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Post-traumatic stress disorder

a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event

Reactive Attachment Disorders

serious condition in which an infant or young child doesn't establish healthy attachments with parents or caregivers

schizophrenia

mental condition of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.
